You are not what’s happened to you.

Therapy for trauma in Port Coquitlam and online across BC.

Are you tired of feeling on edge and disconnected all the time?

Many folks that I have supported mention going between feeling on edge and overwhelmed to feeling disconnected and numb. This is common for people who have experienced trauma.

You are not alone and you can get the support you deserve.

While there are many experiences that people find traumatic, my focus is supporting folks who have experienced relational trauma. Relational trauma includes experiences of abuse, neglect, interpersonal violence, or sexual assault. Those who were betrayed by people they loved, trusted, or relied on often feel they need to hide their struggles and cannot trust others. My approach includes collaborating together to make a plan that meets your unique needs. You are in the driver’s seat and I bring a map with helpful suggestions on how to get us where we want to go.

Your trauma does not define your future. You have the strength and resilience to create a life filled with joy and purpose.

Healing doesn't mean the pain never existed.

It means the pain no longer controls our lives.

How TRAUMA therapy works

You can feel different.

Trauma therapy is not about reliving past traumatic events, but about shifting the ways those events impact you today. I support folks through the three-phase trauma therapy approach. The initial part of therapy is us working together to help you feel more safe in therapy, with yourself, and with others. We will find different tools to support you in becoming more compassionate towards yourself, navigating overwhelming experiences, and tolerating uncomfortable emotions. I draw from a variety of therapeutic models to meet your needs such as dialectical behaviour therapy, mindful self-compassion, mindfulness, somatic therapy, and polyvagal theory.

When you feel ready, the second part of trauma therapy is processing the traumatic events. This is where we will explore how your past is impacting you today. I primarily use EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) which is an evidence-based approach which focuses on changing how our traumatic memories are stored in our brain to decrease how the memories impact us.

The final stage of trauma therapy is reconnection where we explore how you want to reconnect with yourself, others, and what is important in your life. We will explore how you want your life to look now that trauma is not impacting you as much and what you want for the future.

The path to healing is not as linear as described here and we may go back and forth between the phases as we work together. Every person’s journey is different and often a lifelong process of growth and self-discovery.
